Around the world, elephant training methods for interactions are notoriously cruel, making interactions nothing more than a sickening exploitation. Tswale is a wonderful exception to every one of these cruel ‘norms’, making this experience even more special. Saved from being culled as a young elephant with the express purpose of being trained for educational interactions with humans, Tswale graduated after two years of ‘ask and reward’ training. The system is a beautiful interaction between handler and elephant, based on love and trust, which allows us an unrivalled insight into how amazing elephants are intellectually and emotionally.
Most interactions are around an hour long and include an informative insight into elephants, feeding Tswale and even being able to hug him. However, Tswale is free to be an elephant, and this sometimes means that if he wants to go and roll in the mud, swim or take a walk, his new friends get to accompany him on his elephant adventures.
